Sense of Place
Language: English | Location: Deventer
Discover how a place can change the visitor – and not the other way around!
In this Learning Community (LC), you will dive into the concept of Sense of Place: the essence of place, where not the visitor changes the destination but the destination changes the visitor. It’s about meaningfully connecting a place with its visitors. This can involve atmosphere, the stories, the activities, the traditions and the experiences that make a location special.
The place provides meaningful connection through personal experiences, cultural traditions and shared activities. Important characteristics are; diverse, small-scale, local, interactive/interdisciplinary and inclusive. The concept of Sense of Place consistently emphasizes its complex nature, reflecting both individual and collective relationships with specific destinations. A bond that visitors and/or communities build with a place. A bond that provides identity and creates connection between place and visitor.
What will you do in this LC?
You will research how visitors connect to a place. Think about discovering local stories, organizing shared activities or making cultural traditions visible. You will learn how to strengthen the identity of a place and how to contribute to the connection between visitors, residents and the environment, for example through storytelling and developing innovative concepts.
So if you choose this LC, you will learn how places can touch, inspire and connect people. You’ll discover how, as a creative professional, you can make a positive impact on the experience and identity of a place – and therefore on the visitors and people who come or live there.
