Are you interested in a project where you can interact with ‘real’ users, dive into the world of technological aids for cleaning, perform real users tests and develop business cases for your own research results? Read further!

In the Netherlands, it’s policy that elderly people live in their own houses as long as possible. Healthcare technology is rapidly increasing to support them to stay at home. Think for example on a personal alarm device, medicine dispensers, GPS tracking for dementia, day structuring devices, etc.

As the eldery people are not able to do everything on their own, the municipality helps them with various services. One of them is house keeping. A house keeper can come once a week to help cleaning the house, doing the laundry and so on. Technology for house keeping is not yet common sense. Robot vacuum cleaners and window cleaners are only used by a happy few. We are curious whether more technology is available yet, and what both the elderly people’s and the house keepers’ perceptions are of these aids. Our question at this moment is: what kind of technology is available to help both the elderly people and the house keeper to clean the house more efficiently?

In this project we want to take four steps:

1) inventory of user’s needs towards house keeping. From both the perspective of the elderly people and the house keepers.

2) inventory of possible technology to support both the elderly people and the house keepers.

3) Perfoming user tests with selected technologies. Tests need to be performed with the elderly people and / or the house keepers.

4) Developing business cases for the succesful technologies from different perspectives.

But of course, other steps are possible, if you have good arguments for it!

Required study programs:

HBO-ICT IT Service Management: User studies (observations and interviews) need to be performed to gain insights into the work environment of the house holding and the houses of the elderly people. Knowledge of elderly people is necessary to match the user’s needs with technology. Possible new technologies will be tested with the elderly people.

Nursing: User studies (observations and interviews) need to be performed to gain insights into the work environment of the house holding and the houses of the elderly people. Knowledge of elderly people is necessary to match the user’s needs with technology. Possible new technologies will be tested with the elderly people.

Health & Applied Technology: User studies (observations and interviews) need to be performed to gain insights into the work environment of the house keeper and the houses of the elderly people. Knowledge of technology is necessary to match the user’s needs. Possible new technologies will be tested with the elderly people.

Entrepreneurship & Retail Management: Based upon the results of the user inventory and the user tests, a business case needs to be developed. The business case anwers the question whether it is viable for the elderly, the house keeping organisation and the municipality to use specific technology for house keeping.
