CSI-drone: Synthetic drug detection from the sky

Drugs synthesis and export is a huge criminal element in The Netherlands. 18,9 Billion euros of Dutch xtc (MDMA) and speed (amphetamine) are sold each year. This causes an immense nuisance to Dutch society, but also internationally. Drugs waste form the synthesis has a large negative impact on the environment. The aim of this project is to detect the scent/fumes of drugs measured and collected by a drone and validated by a GC-MS-MS. This drone is already built and in use for detection of toxic substance at major fires by the Dutch fire department.

The students’ assignment is to improve a module for capturing the scent/fumes of hard drug synthesis, and to create and validate an GC-MS-MS method. With this, they will be creating automated detection of these drug labs. So, what is the best method to store air samples taken from drug labs and measuring them in the GCMS? Is it possible to create a silent drone? And what is the best setup to isolate the chemical fingerprint of drug labs?
