Teamwork (Virtual Reality Makes the Dream Work)!
Medical issues are becoming increasingly complex. This raises the need for teamwork – interprofessional collaboration. To shape great team players, students from different Health & Wellbeing (H&W) disciplines such as Nursing, Medicine, Physiotherapy and Social work, should be trained to work as an effective team.
Patient care simulations are a way to allow H&W students to develop collaborative competencies, recognise and appreciate their own and other team members’ roles, improve communication skills and establish adequate patient care in a risk-free environment. Although these physical simulations are considered an important tool to train interprofessional collaboration, various time- and place-related obstacles arise when trying to implement them in the study programmes.
Virtual Reality (VR) technology has the potential to overcome several of these obstacles and thereby make it easier to implement simulation-based education. Also, VR offers easy-to- repeat simulations and it enables simulation scenarios (environments, patient responses, etc.) that are difficult or impossible to realise using traditional physical simulation means.
In the Teamwork! project, you will:
- Explore the current best practices of, and opportunities for, interprofessional (simulation) education in the H&W domain, and VR-based education;
- Explore the needs/opportunities for VR-based interprofessional collaboration training in the H&W domain by collecting data from professionals and students in Saxion’s Health (AGZ) and Wellbeing (AMM) schools;
- Develop and evaluate a VR prototype (interactive 360 degrees video or different) that demonstrates an example of a great opportunity you found in the aforementioned exploration.
